Women Fly program attracts female students to aviation careers

Museum of Flight is the largest Independent non-profit air and space museum in the world. With over 175 aircraft and spacecraft, tens of thousands of artifacts, millions of rare photographs, dozens of exhibits and experiences, and a world-class library, the Museum and its people bring mankind’s incredible history of flight to life.

This annual event invites middle and high school students to participate in motivational and career-oriented activities, it will also give them access to learn more from professional women working in a variety of Aviation and Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) careers. Participants will also perform hands-on activities, mentorship opportunities, they will also learn how to prepare for careers in Aviation.

This event is mainly focused on students from backgrounds not commonly represented in Aviation, they include women, communities of color, and gender non-binary individuals.

Below is a brief of what to expect during these dates.

MARCH 21 – Women Fly – Middle School Day

In order to expose middle school participants to the breadth of possibilities for them in the STEM field, workshop leaders will provide general overviews of STEM careers and hands-on activities will introduce participants to concepts such as physics, aerodynamics, and materials science.

MARCH 22 – Women Fly – High School Day

In order to encourage high school participants to follow the goals that they have already set out for themselves, workshop leaders will provide detailed advice about applying for internships and scholarships and navigating intercultural differences in the workplace. Participants will also have opportunities to engage in activities that involve topics such as coding, navigation, and engineering.

Participants will also attend an empowering lecture by a woman in the aviation industry who will share her own personal story of overcoming obstacles to achieve her dreams.

MARCH 23 – Accelerating Innovation for Sustainable Aviation

In the first century of flight, new technologies changed how we fly every decade. As the second century of flight begins, explore how the focus for sustainable aviation can be a catalyst to accelerate innovation.
